The Moonlight Sonata is probably Ludwig van Beethoven's most famous sonata. Already one of the most popular compositions during his lifetime, this musical masterpiece still enjoys great popularity today. For advanced pianists, the "Sonata quasi una Fantasia", named by Beethoven himself, is an absolute must.
A faithful transcription of the Moonlight Sonata is available with the Wiener Urtext Edition, which once again presents an excellently researched and edited edition. Although it is a very demanding piece, which even professionals have to play, it is always advisable to play the Urtext version. Only with Urtexts can a truly authentic realization be mastered that does justice to the musical genius of the composers.
Even though the piano works of the virtuoso of Viennese Classicism are often played, problems in the preserved musical text have not yet been conclusively clarified. Therefore, this edition pays special attention to those open questions, which are explained in detail in critical notes. A bonus are remarks on the performance practice of Beethoven's contemporary and pupil Carl Czerny, which contribute to the success of an imaginative interpretation.
