With M, Waldorf catapults its eternal classic Microwave 1 into the modern era and thus to the top of the wavetable synthesizers. The original from 1989 was inspired by the PPG Wave synthesizers of the time and was a real novelty as a compact rack unit with two digital oscillators and an analog filter. The deep blue synthesizer is equipped with current, powerful Hardware and can even read SysEx files from the over 30 year old first Microwave. In the same housing as Kyra and Iridium, M presents itself as very structured and tidy. The most important functions can be found directly on the surface, everything else can be reached in a few steps via dedicated buttons and the large Display. This makes stepping through the control matrix a thing of the past. At the same time, "M" looks to the future and the past and already has a well-deserved place in the now.
Sound architecture
Each of the eight voices of the "M" has two wavetable oscillators, each drawing on its own pool of 96 wavetables. A further 32 user wavetables can be integrated by the user. Hardsync is switchable between the tone generators, and the sound palette is considerably expanded by the ring modulator and the noise generator. The carefully constructed and (if desired) modulated sound spectrum leads into an analog 24dB Lowpass filter with SSI 2144 chip, which is also known as Curtis filter and already did its job in the first Microwave. The end of the signal path is marked by an analog stereo VCA with panning. Two ADSR envelopes are permanently assigned to filter and VCA. Especially for modulating the Wavetables there is a lush envelope consisting of eight time and eight level elements. The fourth envelope is freely assignable and offers eight elements for time and level. The modulation possibilities are rounded off by two BPM-synchronizable LFOs, as well as various controllers such as modulation wheel, Velocity or aftertouch, which can be assigned as desired.
Four Ms in One!
Since "M" is quadruple multitimbral playable, you can play four sounds on different MIDI channels polyphonically at the same time, depending on the available voices. The four aux outputs can be used stereo via insert cable. For combinations with four sounds there are 128 multi-programs in addition to the 2048 memory locations for single sounds. Each sound also has a programmable arpeggiator and chord mode.
