Chimera from WMD is a digital drum module that specializes in an enormous range of metallic sounds. Based on a granular synthesis, the module uses eleven samples with impulse-rich sound signatures. The samples (Surfaces) were created using tambourines, bells, drills, muzzle bowls, cartridge cases, small change, chains, metal housing and defective modular front panels. There are three different modes (FEEL) for triggering the samples, which provide for syncopated to hard strokes, emphasize the strokes in two fixed strokes and one random one or let the granular synthesis oscillate freely and obtain random metal textures. At the end of the signal chain is a dedicated effect that generates either Quality Reduction, Sample Rate Reduction or Comb Filtering. The decay envelope can be set short and long enough to create pretty much any desired metal sound. The many control voltage inputs can be used in conjunction with a sequencer and other modulation sources such as eg. LFO or gated S&H to create exciting drum patterns. On the one hand, each control has its own CV input, on the other hand, the integrated VCA is a big plus; especially if you work with long decay values and want to add a tremolo effect or rhythmized cuts with an LFO.
