What does the Twin in the name mean?
The UT Twin87 from United Studio Technologies is a large diaphragm condenser microphone equipped with two separate amplifier circuits (Vintage & Modern). The integration of two renowned circuits in one microphone is no accident. With them, the UT Twin87 bundles two historical circuit variants of its role model in a single microphone. or the classic or modern incarnation of the 87er is the best, does not even have to be answered - simply both versions are available.
What sound do I get in Vintage and Modern modes?
The higher capsule bias in Modern mode gives the sound a smoother frequency response with more treble, clearer transients and a wider dynamic range. These are precisely the sonic attributes that in past decades could not be captured as cleanly as they are today due to the technical possibilities. But sometimes you just don't want this technically perfect "modern" sound, but rather a somewhat warmer sound that pleasantly washes out the transients and also drives at louder levels somewhat into the saturation. This is exactly why the UT Twin87 has the Vintage mode.
