The Twisted Electrons MEGAfm is a powerful yet compact Desktop Synthesizer with FM Synthesis. The MEGAfm is a 12-Voice Instrument which uses 2x YM2612 FM Chips and simultaneously provides 4x Operators, which are linked together in 8x Algorithms. 8x Faders per Operator allows for quick adjustment and matching of Ratios and Parameters. These YM2612 FM Chips are the sound of the Megadrive/Genesis Games Console.
FM Sounds
The Sounds come to life with 3x flexibly assignable LFOs, each of which can be retriggered and synchronized to MIDI Clock. The Feedback can be adjusted globally for each Algorithm. You can also influence the distribution of the Voices; the Unison Mode is simply amazing, whilst the Vibrato Effect gives your sounds the final touch. The flexible Arpeggiator cuts a fine figure as a playing aid and even a simple Step Sequencer has been integrated. 6x Banks with 100x Memory Locations each allow you to record the created Sounds. The complete MIDI implementation should suit all those who want to control the MEGAfm from a Groovebox or with a DAW.
Many say, and also advertise, that it has "dirt" or "noise". I tend to see it as a radio, where it can be easy to make noise but if you dial in the parameters in a certain way, it can sound beautiful.
I rated the sound 4 stars not because of the actual sound, but it would require a pre-amp as the signal output is too low for me.
For what it offers it seems to be a little expensive. The YM2612 chip is extremely cheap to buy, but the fact that it is probably the only hands-on FM synth with this level of control out of the box, it's forgivable. The Yamaha Reface DX has a third-party controller and getting both would amount to just about the same as with the MegaFM. Also the build quality is very good and is encased in metal.
Other than that, you can get some warm sounds and when paired with an effects pedal it can take you to another world.
Despite UPS losing the item for a month, with the help of the DV247 staff this thing eventually arrived a month after it was dispatched.
First thing to note is that it only comes with a Euro plug, so you'll need a euro to uk adapter to get it to work, unless you have a 9v (centre positive) power plug that fits.
The sounds are great and easy to work with, much easier than programming a DX7 synth! The sounds instantly bring me back to early 90's games, great for music and SFX alike, I actually bought this for some retro game projects and I think it'll work great for that.
Some of the sliders have a lot more reaction at the top 10% than the rest of the way, for example the volume level and release trail, but it's just a quirk of the instrument and just something to get used to, the presets are a good indicator of what this instrument can do, I've used it a lot since I got it and I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do.
It's very much a one trick instrument but is amazing at what it does, attaching the LFO's to random paramaters is super fun!
Sounds amazing. Build quality is excellent.
It has quite a simplified interface, but there is room to make complex sounds with a lot of tweaking.
It can be quite hard to get the sound required, but I'm still learrning it.
