Tobinski Interpolating Scanner in detail

The Interpolating Scanner from Tobinski is a complex unit consisting of 8 VCA channels that lead into a mixer with scanner. The 8 VCAs make the start; if the CV outputs and individual outputs are left unconnected, they function as input channels for the mixer/scanner unit. If only one control voltage is applied, the amplitude of the corresponding channel is modulated. As soon as a cable is plugged into the individual output of a VCA, the channel is removed from the mixer/scanner unit. All channels lead in parallel to the mixer and scanner section. Both sections have differently configured outputs independently of each other. The odd outputs carry channels 1, 3, 5 and 7, while the even outputs carry channels 2, 4, 6 and 8. There is also a mix output (All) to which all signals are sent. The Mixer section defines how many adjacent channels are selected. The scanner area can selectively jump to the selected stages and/or crossfade between them. There is a bipolar control voltage input with attenuator for both areas and these processes can be automated with two LFOs. Incidentally, this module is a very hot candidate when it comes to distributing signals dynamically in the panorama. The signal inputs accept audio signals and control voltages, so the Interpolating Scanner is also suitable for complex modulation tasks. The module can be expanded with the Harmonic Timing Generator. Both modules are connected to each other via a ribbon cable. The inputs of the scanner are then automatically connected to the outputs of the HTG via a sine wave circuit so that the two modules work as a sine wave oscillator. These two modules enable harmonic interpolation and the creation of complex timbres.
