The OP-XY at first glance
With the OP-XY, Teenage Engineering presents a perfectly formed symbiosis of sequencer, synthesizer, sampler and performance instrument. The OP-XY impresses visually with its chic, uniform design, which stands out visually with a pronounced grayscale gradient. Even the graphics on the high-resolution Display are all in grayscale. Details such as recording or parameter progressions are displayed in eye-catching colors. This is where minimalism meets efficiency and the device also looks a little sexy.
High-quality Hardware and unique features
On the hardware side, the OP-XY impresses with two fast Blackfin CPUs and first-class audio converters, which also have plenty of power to make themselves heard. As the housing is based on the OP-1 field, the OP-XY also has a built-in loudspeaker and an integrated microphone. The pressure-sensitive pitch bend controller is located below the plus and Shift buttons. The best argument for literally picking up the OP-XY more often is the 6-axis accelerometer, which can be assigned to various parameters and actions and triggers changes in the sound and/or pattern simply by moving the instrument. The built-in lithium-ion battery has an operating time of up to 16 hours.
Synth sounds, sampling & effects
The purely digital sound generation is 24-voice multitimbral and contains eight extremely rich synthesizer engines, which are predestined for totally crazy sounds as well as familiar sounds. Three different samplers specialize in drums, multi-samples and synths. As the OP-XY can sample itself via Audio In and the integrated microphone, there is hardly any place where new sample fodder cannot be found. :) Four filter types are available for further processing of the synth and sample engines. Thanks to the send effects Reverb, Delay, Chorus, Distortion, Lofi and Phaser, the sounds can be spiced up in a variety of ways. The EQ, saturator, compressor and limiter mastering functions await the first eight tracks at the main output; skillful use of these components can significantly increase the overall sound's presence and punch.
Sequencer for performers
The heart of the OP-XY is the powerful sequencer whose 16 tracks are divided into 8 tracks for internal sound generation including samples and 8 additional tracks for external instruments such as eg. MIDI expander. Each track can store 9 patterns, which can have a pattern length of up to 64 steps. A song mode is also integrated; songs can have a length of up to 99 scenes; a total of 9 songs can be saved per project. The memory capacity is sufficient for over 10,000 project files including version history, so there is enough space for new patterns over the coming years.
The programming and input of rhythms and sequences is largely based on proven standards such as eg. TR-Grid or quantized real-time input. Furthermore, parameter locks can be set and there are two sequencable FX slots. Randomizers for various parameters, ten groove variants for swing, programmable polyrhythms, an intelligent transpose function called BRAIN and a whopping 24 punch-in effects for fast and unique live variations, which have a long tradition at Teenage Engineering, round off the performance options at a high level. If that's not enough, you can use the accelerator sensor to shift pitches, change grooves and change the effect settings at the same time.
Connect everything!
On the connection side, the OP-XY is equipped with Bluetooth LE for bidirectional MIDI communication as well as audio and MIDI via the USB-C connection. MIDI is also accepted via the TRS input. A special feature here is the multi-out socket, which can be configured for CV, MIDI, audio or sync. Stereo inputs and outputs are available as 3.5mm jack sockets.
