The Tascam DR-40X Digital Audio Recorder is a handy portable 4-track recorder that can also be used as an audio USB interface for Mac and PC. A high-quality stereo condenser microphone (cardioid, up to 125dB) has been installed, whose orientation can be changed for AB and XY applications as well as for MS decoding. Recording is done on SD/SDHC/SDXC cards (up to 128GB) or on the computer, while in contrast to the smaller series siblings, 2x TRS/XLR combo jacks are available for additional microphone/line signals/instruments. In addition, there are various setting options that can be conveniently accessed via the display: overdub recordings, automatic level adjustment, chromatic tuning function, EQ, limiter, marker and more.
The main features of the Tascam DR-40X Digital Audio Recorder include:
Quite a resource. It takes a bit of time to find best routes round the menu and buttons - but not too many blind alleys. Surprised that the internal condenser mics were quite so noisy, but easily addressed later . Hand holding the mic can generate unwanted sound. No case with this recorder, and difficult to find online.
Discounting the external mic inputs I found that in terms of user friendliness and ease of setting up I prefer not tghe Zoom H4n Pro, but the Zoom H2n.
Nevertheless this is a great recorder and very good value.
