The Tascam CD-200 uses a brand new transport, the TEAC CD-5020A. The new transport is custom designed for audio playback with a smooth loading drawer and low clamping noise. The internal clock has been improved for a smoother sound and decreased jitter.
The Tascam CD 200 has unbalanced phono outputs and S/PDIF digital out on coaxial and optical jacks. MP3 and WAV file playback is supported, and front-panel Folder navigation buttons are provided. A wireless remote control with numerical track select buttons is also included.
I was attracted by the simple “spartan” design of the Tascam CD-200. No unnecessary “bells&whistles”, only the minimum of controls on the face plate for a proper and purposeful operation, all arranged in a logical way to facilitate its use. The pushbutton activated pitch control is an extra, typical for professional applications, and the CD-200 is intended exactly for this type of use. Operation of the mechanism is quiet and smooth and leaves nothing to be desired. Sonically this player provides a well balanced neutral sound, with a strong bass and crisp high end, and no coloration at all. Significantly better than the specifications suggest. Labeled as a basic CD player for professional applications, the Tascam CD-200 does its job exactly as intended by its design, and is worth every cent of its price tag.
