The fourth version of Steinberg's notation and composition software Dorico has a lot of new features that allow you to realize musical ideas even faster and more purposefully. Dorico 4 scores with a beginner-friendly user interface and many functions that help you - no matter if you are composing, arranging or orchestrating. Benefit from countless improvements in various corners of the program and look forward to tools that meet all requirements - no matter what your work focus is.
Of course, the software includes the typical functions of the previous versions with which you can import/export, edit and print your works.
In the lower part of the software you will find the Key Editor, which now allows you to edit MIDI data and adjust the output of the notes even more easily. Conveniently, the view is automatically synchronized, so you always have an overview. Edit

Transferring MIDI data of a large orchestral piece from a DAW to music notation programs can quickly degenerate into hours of work. So can the tedious copying and pasting from one staff to another, and the hurdle of recognizing instruments and playing techniques hidden behind track names. All of this takes a lot of time, but that's where Dorico 4 provides a remedy. The new MIDI import function intelligently interprets existing MIDI tracks and remembers your settings for future import operations.

To get an even clearer transcription, Dorico 4 now automatically separates music into individual voices, whether you're using the new intelligent MIDI import features or playing music from a MIDI keyboard in real time. Melodies, basslines and inner textures are automatically captured, which means that you are many steps closer to the notated result as soon as the recording is finished.

One of the special features of Dorico is the Insert mode. With its help, you can easily make rhythm changes and insert or remove music in the middle of a part without negatively affecting the notes that follow. The editable stop position sets a point in the part from which all previous changes should end or up to which you want to insert new notation elements. In addition, the Insert mode lets you choose whether to edit only the current voice, all voices of the current instrument, or all instruments in the score. And when you add notation elements for all instruments, you are left with the choice between moving the music in the following bars or extending the current bar. This makes it even easier to insert cadences or sections without meter.

Unlike conventional notation software, no plug-ins or add-ons are needed to use all important melodic and rhythmic transformations such as rotation, inversion and inversion. They are just a click away and affect not only the notation itself, but also all other notation elements including slurs, dynmics, playing techniques and more. Transpose music from one key to another or perform complex pitch mappings with just a few keystrokes via a handy popover!

In addition to the properties area, the new key editor and the mixer, the lower zone also contains three new input instruments that allow you to enter notes even faster - if you want, even via the touch screen of a Windows device such as eg. Microsoft Surface. Simply click or tap on the on-screen keyboard to enter notes into the score. Create guitar tags by touching the string and fret on the fretboard or open the

The playback mode has also been reworked to provide an even better overview. The key editor is now located in the lower zone, while the track overview has been simplified by integrating a new track inspector on the left. This gives you lightning-fast access to routing, channel settings and much more. The mixer has been completely redesigned - it is now even more beautiful and responsive than before. You can choose between displaying the main controls of the lower zone and the full mixer in a separate window where you can adjust channel, EQ, insert effects and more.

Macs with M1 processors are still relatively new on the market, but Dorico is already the first professional notation and composition software to run natively on the new Apple systems. Some editing operations are even twice as fast on Apple Silicon Macs compared to Intel users. The improved power efficiency of the new system architecture also ensures that you can make and enjoy even more hours of music with your MacBook Air or Pro before it needs to be plugged in for charging.
