As early as the 1960s, Sonor thrilled the drum world with its Teardrop Series drums, which were named after the teardrop shape of the lugs. Stars of the drum scene at the time such as Connie Kay, Roy Haynes and Sonny Payne were among the advocates of the drum series, which was already manufactured to the highest quality standards. The original drums from this musically exciting time have become extremely rare collector's items and only a few drummers today can still enjoy this legendary drum sound. The popularity of the Teardrop series prompted Sonor to launch the Vintage series. The Vintage drums are much more than just a tribute to the legendary predecessors. They correspond in large parts to the original drums from the 60s, but peppered with the latest technology and manufactured according to the latest manufacturing methods.
The shells of the Vintage drums are made of a total of 9 layers of beech wood, glued together using the "CLTF" process (Cross Laminated Tension Free) to form a perfect round shell. This gives them a total thickness of just 6 mm, a first-class prerequisite for excellent vibration behavior. Despite the low wall thickness, they do not require any additional reinforcement rings. The round bearing edges of the Vintage shells ensures maximum head-to-shell contact, which improves the transfer of vibrations to the shell. The sound also gets an extra portion of warmth and a slightly shortened sustain.
As already mentioned, the design of the lugs comes from the Teardrop series. However, the Vintage lugs resemble the original only on the outside, because inside the lugs is the latest technology in the form of the Sonor TuneSafe system, which is responsible for the tuning stability. On the tom toms, the fancy lugs are offset, meaning each lugl is slightly offset from its respective counterpart. The flanged "super profile" steel hoops of the teardrop era have been given a small lift-up and, together with the curved Vintage Sonor logo, complete the noble and high-quality appearance of the Sonor Vintage Drums. The heads are made by Remo.
