the Power of 2 x LYRA-4 (SOMA labs demo)
Soma presents the Lyra-4 the halved version of the highly acclaimed Lyra-8 drone synthesizer. The main difference is in the oscillator section, where Lyra-4 has fouroscillators instead of eight. The Delay has one timeline instead of two and, unlike the Lyra-8, there is no audio input. The fully analogue instrument has four oscillatorswith variable waveforms, which can be used individually with their own envelope or combined for complex FM sounds. Of course, the more compact version is characterized by the equally incredibly expressive and organic-sounding basic sound of the Lyra-8.
Expressive
The Soma Lyra-4 can be played either with the VCA open (drone mode) or with the eight very sensitive sensors below the oscillators. These each represent a pair of contacts; the upper one triggers the envelope, the lower one the pitch control. Both buttons are so sensitive that the speed of pressure, intensity and duration have a significant influence on the sound design. Even environmental influences such as higher humidity have an effect on the sensors.
Impulsive soundscapes
For modulations, there is a dual LFO with two simultaneously usable frequencies. It is also possible to switch whether one or both should have an effect and whether the second LFO should modulate the first. Complex? No, actually only the Hyper LFO. Further modulations are possible at the oscillator level additively or instead of the LFO; in pairs, two oscillators influence the neighbouring oscillator group. The CV inputs in the Lyra-4 have been reduced somewhat, so only Voice and Delay (Time) can be modulated via control voltage.
Effects
The sounds created are given the finishing touch by the delay with attached distortion. The time range of the delay has a wide control range and reaches into self-oscillation with a lot of matching Feedback, which creates resonant and pulsating soundscapes; the timeline can also be modulated with the Hyper LFO. Transformer-like sounds, Flanger sounds and everything you need for "dub" can be created in no time at all. The distortion downstream of the Delay plays a huge part in the possible sound design.
