The Peavey 6505 PLUS HEAD is part of the 6505 Series of guitar amplifiers, named in celebration of Peavey's first 40 years, 1965 to 2005. The 6505 also marks the relaunch of the 5150 Series, the immensely popular amplifiers Peavey designed with Edward Van Halen. Like the 6505 head, the 6505+ offers two channels. However, the 6505+ adds separate EQ, Resonance, and Presence controls to each channel, giving you more control and flexibility. The 6505 Plus Head features six 12AX7 preamp tubes and four 6L6GC power amp tubes, with presence and resonance controls and three-band EQ for taming their notorious tone. While known as the 5150, these amps became the undisputed go-to guitar amps for scores of rock, hardcore and metal bands due to their raw tone, relentless power and road-proven reliability. The 6505 is still the unquestionable choice for an ever-expanding list of endorsers, including Ted Nugent, In Flames, Visqueen, HIMSA, Darkest Hour, Sworn Enemy, Unearth, Bleeding Through, Story of the Year, P.O.D., Bullet For My Valentine, Chimaira, Evergreen Terrace and many more.
The main features of the Peavey 6505 PLUS HEAD include:
OK, before moving to chugging, don't buy this for clean. Clean is OK at best..... at a push. The Crunch channel is equivalent to fairly high gain on most other amps and for good dirty rock this channel is great. Really the lead channel is what you buy this beast for. At the current price, this is a bargain. I am playing this through a 4x12 and even at fairly low volume it still packs a punch. I also have a Diezel and it is a fairly different sound even though they are both in the high gain spectrum albeit one costing nearly three times as much.
The gain at 12 o'clock is about as much gain as you might even need a really thick punch sound. Put a tube screamer in front to tighten it up and it is really perfect for a tight thick metal rhythmic chug. It comes with a very robust foot switch included which is nice and made to use in anger. Easy to see chicken foot knobs and the wide range resonance and presence controls can really tune this to your speakers. This is also a LOUD amp in every sense of the word loud.
Whether a venue will allow you to gig with this blasting out, unless you attenuate it, is another matter, plus it is pretty heavy to carry around. If you are looking for that heavy 90s cutting tube sound then, yes it might be a one trick pony, but it does that trick better than pretty much any other amp.
A really good fun amp whether you are gigging heavy rock or just enjoying at home being washed in a really great wave of sound. The perfect beast to keep the neighbours up at night, but at least you will be smiling with a huge smile when the environmental police drag you away.
