The PRS John Mayer Silver Sky RW (Moc Sand) is a 6-String Electric Guitar with an Alder Body, Maple Neck and Rosewood Fingerboard. The Fingerboard of the Rosewood Instruments in this John Mayer Signature Series has a subtle rounding of the shoulders, for a more “rounded” feel in the hand. Both models were hard-tested by Mayer on stage during the refining process, to produce High-Quality Instruments which combine established tradition with a modern vision.
Classic Double Cut Design
John Mayer's Silver Sky embodies the ergonomic feeling of traditional Double Cut-Away Guitars and lifts the timeless design to today's stages. In addition to classic features such as the Top-Load Construction and contours for arm and chest, Paul Reed Smith gave the lower Cut-Away the typical 'scoop', enabling easier access to the high frets.
635JM Single Coils
Powerful, but full of character and not too harsh, the Single Coil Pick-Ups have been designed especially for John’s Silver Sky. Full, round and warm sounds are always available, without denying the characteristic sound of the Single Coils. The Pick-Up Circuits, which can be selected via the 5-Way Blade Switch, awaken the whole palette of the set, especially the intermediate positions (2 and 4) which testify to the good balance between the Pick-Ups.
Bolt-On Maple Neck
The construction of the PRS Silver Sky follows the classic Bolt-On Design. The quadruple Maple Neck Plate, which is screwed to a specially designed Silver Sky Neck Plate, features a Rosewood Fingerboard and classic Small Bird Inlays as Fret Markings. The profile is a subtly rounded variation of the painstakingly recreated classic 1963/64 Instruments used by Mayer, most of which have an extremely low fretboard radius of around 7.25".
PRS Custom Hardware
The Hardware of the PRS Silver Sky remains traditional, albeit with the unique PRS/Mayer stylings. First of all, the Jack Plate Design was adapted and rounded off by Paul Reed Smith, so that Instrument Cables can be easily connected and disconnected. The Vintage Tremolo is held in place by 6x Screws resting on knife edges and has 4x Steel Springs, which allow the Baseplate to rest on the Body. This not only optimises reliable Tuning and Double-Stops, but also provides a stronger Signal and improved Sustain.
I've always been a fan of PRS gear and owned a number of SEs and and S2, but this just takes it to another level. I get that other reviewers have had issues with the tuning pegs/control knobs, etc, but the quality isn't that bad.
I wasn't sure I was going to get on with the neck radius, but it's extremely comfortable and doesn't take too long to get used to.
Best guitar i’ve owned and so very good to look at with many changing colours throughout owing to the stunning flip flop paint job .
Volume/ knobs and pickup-switch feels cheap. Finish on the neck is pretty sticky but not too much but the neck profile is unbelievable good!
It keeps tune well, great sustain and the tone is something else.
