The One from Oxi Instruments is a performance-oriented multitrack sequencer for MIDI, CV/Gate and the DAW. The structure of One is designed in such a way that four fully configurable sequencers are available in one device. This makes it easy to sequence setups with at least four devices and 32 tracks respectively, depending on the mode selected for each sequencer. There are six different modes to choose from: Multi (8 tracks, ideal e.g. for Drum tracks), Chord (up to 8 voices), Mono, Polyphonic (up to 7 voices), Stochastic (randomized) and Metriceal (generative improvisation). Each sequencer can have its own timing, running direction and shuffle value. In addition, each sequencer has two LFOs, a looper and an arpeggiator with 15 modes and extensive setting options. On the one hand, you have powerful live tools at your fingertips, while on the other, you can incorporate modulation directly into the pattern.
Breathing life into sequences
This is where the extended MIDI and CV matrix comes into play, making it possible to link LFOs, envelopes and sequences drawn on the pad field with over 40 internal and external modulations. This allows you to eg. MIDI CCs in motion, switch through the octaves of the arpeggiator, fade the Velocity of drum tracks in and out cyclically and best of all: freely assign these modulations to the CV/Gate outputs!
Patterns & ways in
Patterns can have a length of up to 128 steps. Those who like to work withrandomizers can define them for numerous functions such as eg. Pitch, velocity, gate length. The Humanizer goes into even more detail, deliberately incorporating inaccuracies such as eg. Timing or trigger. Patterns can be visually arranged and linked using the Live Arranger with song view. Notes can be entered in real time, via chaser input, with a connected MIDI keyboard, Euclidean sequencer (defines how often a note trigger occurs within the sequence length), the drum pattern generator (based on Mutable Instruments grids; a kind of map for note triggers) and keyboard mode. The 128 RGB pads are primarily intended for entering notes and visualize functions and values. Thanks to the multi-touch functionality, the entire pad field can be used as a controller for slides, X/Y input and hand-drawn parameters.
Music theory at the touch of a button
With the innovative Chord Mode, you can easily create chord progressions with numerous chord types, voicings, spread and bass options. All these options are housed in intuitive chord menus. The chords can be easily arpeggiated with the chord arpeggiator, which offers over 150 chord variations. Thanks to the practical harmonizer function, other instruments or tracks can be sequenced so that they follow the chord progressions harmoniously. The combination of Chord Mode and Harmonizer is simply a killer combo and can be used to create very musical patterns without in-depth musical knowledge.
Outro
With the One, Oxi Instruments has succeeded in creating a very versatile sequencer that clearly sets itself apart from other pure Hardware sequencers. In addition to targeted inputs, One relies on mathematics and coincidences as well as functions that first earned their laurels in the Eurorack world. One can do things that you probably can't do in the DAW or that would take forever.
Connections
Anyone who needs more than one MIDI output is well advised to use the SPLIT Box, which supplements One with two additional MIDI outputs (3x MIDI Out in total) and a Thru output. The MIDI input can be used to connect a master keyboard or to synchronize One as Slave to another device. An instrument with Din Sync (e.g. TB-303, TR-606) or a Eurorack sequencer via TR-TR splitter can be connected to the clock inputs and outputs using a DIN adapter. Pipe is the connection for the Eurorack module of the same name, which reduces the cable clutter of the CV/Gate outputs behind One to a minimum and ensures more order in the modular system. The eight CV and gate outputs can be whatever you need them to be: 8x Velocity and Gate for drum triggers, 2x 4 CV/Gate outputs for two four-voice modular voices, 4x CV/Gate + 4x LFO or envelope + 4 drum triggers... On top of that, One features Bluetooth, which converts to MIDI, CV/Gate and USB and vice versa! So if you want to play the modular system with your BluetoothKeytar or Blaswandler, you can get started right away.
