Analog Synthesizer with 303-Style Sequencer

Mono by Norand is an analog desktop synthesizer with 303-style sequencer, whose possibilities can easily compete with those of a large modular system. At first glance you'll find two analog oscillators of the same type with continuously variable waveforms from sine to triangle to square to sawtooth, hardsync, FM, mixer, an 18db state variable Multimode filter with keytracking that masters bandpass, Lowpass and Highpass with all variations in between as well as a VCA with ADSR envelope. At the bottom right of the unit you will find X-Mod and X-Envelope. With this equipment, one would like to assume that Mono tends to typical 303 sounds and the common repertoire of 2-oscillator sounds. Yes, that definitely works, but the instrument really comes alive when you animate one or more parameters in the sequencer via Accent and/or take care of the 13(!) very nimble attack/decay envelopes and a total of 20 modulators. Really every synth parameter can be modulated, occasionally there are also variants respectively switchable ranges. With so many dynamics in the sound, lively sequences, meandering basslines, artifact-like clusters, Buchla bongos, metallic FM thunderstorms and much more are truly no problem. The compact device can take the butter off the bread of many a big player in terms of sound and modulation possibilities.

303-style sequencer!

The sequencer of Mono has it in itself. The operation goes in the direction of a 303, but is much clearer thanks to the TR grid. Each pattern can be up to 64 steps long and can be stored with its own scale, Shuffle and divider factor. The large keys correspond to the small white keys, so you always know where in the sequence what happens, even without Display. For each step, besides pitch and note length, microshift (offset before/after the clock), ratcheting, trigger probability, and naturally Slide and Accent can be programmed. If you like to work with randomness or have an uninspired moment you may be happy about the extensive randomizer function, which is also part of the sequencer. Notes, parameter ranges, whole steps, Ratcheting and other parameters can be re-randomized by the machine. Mono provides access to 32 projects, each storing 64 patterns; that's 2048 patterns in direct access! The patterns also store the sound settings.

Connections

Mono can communicate with a DAW via USB MIDI and is well positioned for pretty much any hardware setup with MIDI In, Out and Thru connections. The audio output is routed out of the instrument with large jack. The control voltage outputs with 3.5mm jack for clock, reset, CV1, CV2, Gate and Accent are Eurorack compatible and are ideal to drive a Eurorack modular system and/or most CV/Gate powered analog synths from the 80s to today.
