The Moog Theremini is the little brother of one of the first electronic instruments, the Theremin. The tones are elicited from the instrument by intuitive gesture control and supported by a built-in tuner and pitch-correction system, which resolves existing or self-programmed scales in various intensities.
The built-in LCD display provides immediate visual feedback of the notes played, so you can remember reference notes and their corresponding hand position. You can choose from 32 preset sounds and assign each sound its own scale with a changeable key note. The Theremini has a headphone jack, as well as 2 mono jack outputs. A speaker is built into the Theremini so you can listen to the Theremini without additional amplification. MIDI data can be exchanged via a mini USB port.
At the highest level of pitch quantization, only the preset notes of the corresponding scale are playable. The lower the pitch quantization is set, the more detuning and vibrato can be played as well, making the sound more lively. In the lowest setting the Theremini reacts like a conventional theremin and the analog oscillator controls the pitch without help. Thus, a glissando is then also possible.
The item arrived at my house on time, and in perfect condition. The packing was quite safe. I assume that if it was very fragile some pads may have been added to the box, but in any case it was perfect.
The product per se has one or two downsides in my opinion but overall is great and does what is says it does. I state here that i m not a theremin player and this is my first theremin.
First thing i m not happy with, is the antenna storage underneath. I plucked out the antenna alright, it was not the easiest thing to do gently but i m not able to put it back at all. it needs tremendous pushing and i don t want to put so much pressure on it. For the record as it has a little button to pull back in order to secure and insecure i had other people try, stronger than me, but it is just not happening. I sent an e mail at moog via my account about the matter and how much pressure i m supposed to put on it, but its been some time and no answer.
Another problem is the stand, well it says in the handbook and i quote here "the ideal placement for your theremini is on a microphone stand or a camera style tripod" and i assumed that this means that a normal camera tripod would fit, but no! the mount larger so now i have to try and find a microphone stand... for the time being i use an ikea laptop table.
Otherwise the product is great. It comes with a software that has several xtra presets that you can install on your theremini or you can buy even more. You can also alter parameters on the presets via this program. To be honest i have not actually used it yet to see how it does work.
Calibrating the theremini was something that made me nervous before it arrived, well is simple and easy and well instructed by the hand book and the software so i m very happy with that. Note here that calibration as a procedure is easy, but i think a person needs to be very conscious about his body his playing and his choosing of scale in order to make the best calibration so i m learning into it bit by bit.
The button and knob functions are all great they work perfectly and add to the sound. The famous pitch correction is actually helpful if you are a beginner although i feel overdoing it sounds too "quantified" if that makes any sense, and for me being around 20-30 % makes it even easier to play for some unexplainable reason.
The speaker is just alright, not to loud but still satisfactory. And i have not used it as a midi controller at all by now.
Overall this is a buy that i do not regret and i would recommend to others that want to start playing the theremin. I think is a good medium to learn and nice to play. I have no opinion about how easy it would be for live performances e.t.c. But to all "new to theremin" people remember it is very difficult to master and it needs lots of patience and practice.
I really love this instrument, great build quality as you would expect from moog, sound quality is great and its fun to play as well!! The presets are great and you can download an app from the app store to edit/make new sounds. All in all, well worth the money!!
