Kurzweil SP7 Grand Sounds
Kurzweil SP7 Grand at a glance
The SP7 Grand is a successful stage piano with a fully weighted, velocity-sensitive 88-key hammer action keyboard and extensive features. The sound generation is based on the newly developed A.T.S.T. synthesis platform (Authentic Timbre Synthesis Technology). Thanks to specially developed semiconductors, the engine offers high-fidelity audio, significantly optimized sound programming and virtually seamless velocity layer transitions. Great attention has been paid to the grand piano samples, which feature higher resolution, smooth velocity transitions and a dual oversampling filter, making them a first for Kurzweil in terms of realism. With 301 Factory sounds, the SP7 Grand draws from the full range. There are 512 memory locations for multi-programs and 128 more for user multis. The sounds of the stage piano can be further refined with 21 different effects, including reverb, chorus, tremolo, delay, dynamics, Distortion and EQ, among others. The audio inputs also benefit from Kurzweil's effects quality, and the four-voice Vocal harmonizer should be a welcome extra for singers and songwriters. The high polyphony of 256 voices is high enough to ensure that no decaying note is swallowed even when playing faster. Even with multi-track "note bombardment" from the DAW, there is enough space to reach into the keyboard with both hands.
Simple operation
For a stage piano with these features, the SP7 Grand is very easy to use. The 16 category keys on the right side of the control panel guide you to your favourite sound category in the shortest possible way. The 7" colour touch display facilitates the operation immensely and offers a quick navigation through menu pages and parameters. Furthermore, eight parts each have their own arpeggiator, so that bass lines, melodies and the appropriate accompaniment can be created in no time. The Kurzweil is also a 16-zone MIDI controller, which is perfect for external MIDI equipment such as an expander and for controlling sounds in the DAW. The controls to the left of the Display serve both to modify the internal sounds and as assignable controllers for the external gear. Various split and layer modes are implemented for the keyboard.
Professional connections
In addition to the input for the power supply, there are connections for volume and switch pedals as well as the included sustain pedal. Stereo outputs connect the instrument to a mixing console, an audio interface or the home stereo system. Conveniently, additional monitor outputs on the rear panel can also be controlled separately in the SP7 Grand; this allows you to level yourself appropriately in live performance. The headphone output allows undisturbed playing and practising at any time of the day or night. The USB port enables the Stage Piano to be connected to a computer and used as a master keyboard with music software (DAW). The USB port also sends and receives two audio channels in 24 bit / 48 kHz on the input and output side, so the playing on the instrument can be digitally recorded without any loss. The MIDI inputs and outputs allow interaction with other MIDI equipment such as a sound expander or a sequencer.
