The portable PPA-101 loudspeaker from JB Systems surprises in its compact form with numerous functions and features. Included are a handheld radio microphone, a pocket transmitter with headset, an IR remote control and antenna for the built-in radio as well as a suitable cable for 12VDC car connections, all of which can even be stowed inside the box!
Starting with the design, the company opted JB Systems for a trolley system where the loudspeaker can be simply pulled behind you for rolling and pulling out the handle. This saves you having to carry the box on longer journeys from the car to the place where it is positioned. Nevertheless, the 12.5kg speaker is quite easy to lift and mount on tripods thanks to the 35mm flange on the underside. If you look at the back, you can see the most important functions, which brings us to the technical features.
Starting at the top, there is a USB player, Bluetooth receiver and radio unit with illuminated display in one. The USB player supports both WMA files and MP3 formats up to 320kbps and is compatible with popular USB sticks. Using the Bluetooth function, you can quickly stream and play music tracks from devices such as smartphones. The internal FM radio with its presets receives frequencies between 87.5 and 108 MHz. Standard functions such as play/pause, skip, loop etc. can be accessed via the buttons under the display or via the supplied remote control.
To the left and right of the display there are antenna connections for the radio, as well as for the handheld radio microphone and the pocket transmitter. You can activate the hand microphone, which transmits on the 863.35MHz frequency at its own switch and on the back of the loudspeaker itself. Simply set the small switch in the EXT.MIC channel to W.MIC 1. The pocket transmitter (864.80MHz) in turn connects to the WIRELESS MIC 2 channel when switched on by itself.
A total of 4 channels with their own equalizer for bass and treble as well as a master are available:
Internal Player channel: This determines the volume of the incoming signal from the radio/bluetooth receiver/USB player.
Line channel: Here you can connect line signals via a balanced combination socket, a cinch input or a 3.5mm jack socket.
EXT.MIC/W.MIC1 channel: As mentioned above, this channel is used to receive the handheld radio microphone signal. However, it can also be used for external microphones
with cables via a balanced combination socket.
WIRELESS MIC 2 channel: This channel is reserved for the bodypack transmitter and its headset microphone and can bring speech/sung into the foreground via a switchable talkover function if music is coming out of the loudspeaker at the same time. At the same time there is a line out in the same channel strip which can be used for another speaker.
All in all, this small, just 55cm large speaker box with its 50W RMS offers an amazing number of functions that are very useful for presentations, school events, etc.. Also the possible insertion of a battery as well as the car connection offer themselves in many respects, in order to be fast and flexibly operational.
