Sample and Hold / Gate / Sequencer Controller / Shift Register
Intellijel Shifty is a sequencer module for modular synthesizers in Eurorack format. It is a combination of four sample and hold stages, sequential gate and sequencer controller. The primary use of Shifty is to route each new note in a monophonic sequence to one of up to four synth voices according to a certain pattern. This way pseudo-polyphonic sequences can be created: one voice is triggered and sounds out while the next voice is already triggered in the sequence. Another term for this is hocketing. But Shifty also offers many possibilities as a shift register.
Shifty and the shift register
Intellijel Shifty can also be used as an analog shift register. In this mode, each new gate signal causes the current set of pitches to move to the next output while replacing the last signal. An interesting way to create chords consisting of up to four notes from a pitch sequence source that has a harmonic series of notes. The use of only two outputs also results in a melodically interesting interaction and transforms even simple sequences into complex melodies.
