The Gibson Les Paul Standard 2016 T 6-String Electric Guitar Gold Top delivers everything you would expect from an instrument that has become synonymous with rock and pop music over the last fifty years. Modern weight relief techniques have further added to the exceptional build quality of this instrument with improved subtleties in resonance and sustain.
The mahogany neck comes with a compound radius offers the best feel on the market, whether you’re soloing or playing open chords. Furthermore a thick Rosewood fingerboard loaded with 22 frets is an inherent addition to the high quality of this neck delivering the best ratio of playability, resonance and sustain.
The nut width is slightly narrower than models on previous years, marking a return to the historic original width that players prefer.
Gibson uses a self lubricating Graphtech nut that helps strings return to pitch from heavy string bending while adding sustain. Burstbucker Pro humbuckers offer true PAF tone however a coil splitting option is also included for players looking for a slightly thinner more delicate sound.
The guitar head features Grover locking tuners for best in class performance and undisputed tuning stability. The Gibson Les Paul Standard 2016 comes in a traditional brown hardshell case.
Perfect fit and finish as it has been PLEK'd. The guitar has a good weight for a Les Paul without being overly heavy. The neck is perfect for me, not too thin or too fat and the asymmetrical carve is so comfortable. The push/pull pots allow for an almost endless array of sounds from this guitar. Case and bits are all there too. I will change the nut to improve tuning stability but I'd do that on most Gibsons. Highly recommended!
After a month of hard use, the Gold Top still delivers the goods. Weighing in at just under 9 lb /4 kg it is an ideal weight to sit with or have hanging from a strap. The Gold Top is an iconic guitar which is timeless in appearance. The finish is flawless and oozes quality. The colour is deep and rich, the binding contrasts the colour in a subtle way which is complimentary and complete. The control knobs and chrome hardware are the icing on the cake. It’s a visual delight which has been appreciated and admired for decades.
The Gold Top is a pleasure to play. This is my first asymmetrical slim taper neck and it feels natural in the hand. My other Gibson Les Paul has a 50's profile neck and there was no issue with going from a thicker rounder neck to the Gold Top’s slimmer profile. The feel of the neck is smooth and effortless.
Out of the box the intonation was spot on, I only had to raise the action slightly to suit my style of playing and the fret board required a light oiling. The frets were well dressed and level. The relief of the neck was just right, and I have not experienced any issues with fret buzz or sustain. The Gold Top sings just as it should. The Tektoid nut is good, it is cut precisely, and I have not experienced any problems with tuning or tone where this is concerned.
The Burstbucker Pros deliver that Les Paul Tone all be it a little bright if not dialled in correctly and depending on your flavour you may need more bite or growl. However, dialling the Burstbuckers in to a sweet spot delivers a fulfilling tone I can appreciate. In my opinion they would be best suited for blues and classic rock. The pickups are connected to the pots via a 4-wire plug to the Gibson PCB. The 4 push/pull pots function well and deliver a range of familiar tones. I normally play through a modified Marshall JVM and I have also put the Gold Top through its paces with 2 different Blackstar amps and 2 different Fender amps. It delivers great tones each time, consistently and exceptionally.
The hardware on the Gold Top is the usual Gibson chrome spec. The bridge is seated well and the intonation in relation to the saddle position is accurate and within Gibson specs. The locking hardware on the Gold Top is appreciated. I would not want to damage the finish of this guitar when re stringing. The locking tuners are faultless. I use a sonic research tuner which is very precise and the Grovers hardly waver through moderate playing, they have not caused me any concerns and I am impressed with them. The 18:1 gear ratio is appreciated.
Am I happy with the Gold Top T? Yes, most definitely. Like many guitar players with any guitar, I will swap out the pickups, change the wiring and the hardware. I already have plans to swap the tail piece, the bridge and swap out the pickups with 3 assorted brands I have lying around my man cave. It’s a guitar thing, right? But straight out of the box the Gibson Les Paul Gold Top T Standard is one hell of a guitar. It looks great and plays fantastic and delivers a fulfilling experience. Highly recommended and most definitely a purchase I researched thoroughly before pulling the trigger. So glad I hit the bulls eye with this one.
