The Blaze drum series by Fame is aimed at the pros of tomorrow. Beginners and advanced drummers will find a fully equipped drumset with everything they need to start a successful drumming career. Aside from the 5-piece shell set consisting of bass drum, 2 tom toms, floor tom and a snare drum, they are also provided with a hardware set with all necessary stands and a pedal. In terms of features and sound, the low priced Blaze drums do not have to hide from much more expensive brand instruments. The Fame Blaze series offers one of the best price-peformance ratios on the market.
The shells of the Blaze drums are made from poplar. Poplar is a very popular wood for entry level instruments. Despite the low price, it offers nice tonal features and is also easy to process. A pretty remarkable feature in this price range: the tom toms are mounted on so called rim mounts to guarantee optimal resonance and sustain which drastically improves the sound. The drums are tuned with the help of flanged hoops and standard tuning rods. The tom holders feature multiple adjustment options in order to offer precise setup possibilities.
The bass drum features wooden hoops with a nice inlay in set color. A tomholder for two single tom mounts is attached to the top of the bass drum. The telescope bassdrum legs have adjustable feet which can be switched between rubber and spurs. The bass drum claws are rubber padded. This feature does not only protect the hoop, it also results in a more resonant sound of the bass drum.
Just like the rest of the drum set, the snare drum is also made from poplar. It features steel hoops with a total of 8 dual lugs. The 20-strand snare wire is made from steel and provides a nice crack to the sound.
In order to guarantee maximum durability of this kit, all stands of the hardware set feature double braced legs. It does not only make the stand more robust, it also guarantees solid positioning thanks to the increased weight. The pedal is driven by a reliable single chain and features a classic felt beater.

To be honest, I had been bracing myself for a possible number of quality issues, and I had even started by ordering 'better' drum heads together with the order for the kit.
Amazingly enough for a kit at this price, it came already equipped with Remo batter heads. It also came with a few features like 'floating' tom-tom holds and tom-tom adjustment presets that practically copy these features on my much more expensive Gretsch set.
The overall quality makes this much more than just a beginner's or practice set. That also goes for the hardware, which is really decent quality.
The shipment came as a do-it -yourself assembly kit, with no Ikea-like instructions. A drummer with some experience will have no trouble putting everything together. A beginner however would do well to get some assistance. A little damping and pimping and good tuning will get you a great sound out of this kit. I would moreover advise the 5201 kit over the 5221. The measurements of the 5201 make it look much more 'professional' than the somewhat oversized 5221.
No issues at all then? Well, the edges of the kettle finish are not exactly glued together invisibly, but the joint on the bass drum is at the bottom and the floating tom holders can be positioned in such a way that the joints on the toms can be positioned out of sight. No such issues for the snare drum which can be made to sound great, by the way. The drum stool is the only cheap item, but it will do the job until you have saved up for a more comfortable one. The bass drum has a rather carrying sound, but nothing that cutting a porthole in the front drumhead and an old blanket inside won't fix.
All in all, an amazingly good buy.
