The Octatrack is an elegant sampler. Recording of sounds is a breeze thanks to the intuitive user interface, but the fun really starts once the samples are inside the machine. Loops are now completely elastic. They will always stay in sync no matter if they are pitch shifted or if the tempo of the sequencer is changed. Single sounds can be molded into any shape or form. The static nature of samples are finally a thing of the past.
The Compact Flash card compability allows for huge amounts of samples to be constantly accessible. The USB port is ideal when transfering sample libraries between your computer and the Octatrack. The optical fader can be assigned to any of the parameters, adding a wealth of live control possibilities.
An Octatrack, a Machinedrum and a Monomachine will be the ideal gear combo. The Machinedrum takes care of the rhythms. The Monomachine is perfect for all things melodic. The Octatrack adds set-and-forget live sampling and manipulation of preloaded audio material. These machines will basically be all that is needed to produce great tracks or to really take a live performance to the next level.

If you want to know if the Octatrack is worth it’s value, as a “workhorse” device for creating music, the answer is, yes. It is an all station music production sampling machine and sequencer, with limitations, yes, but with an idiosyncrasy, that if you lear it, leads you to sonic exploration, composition, performing and producing music (to a certain extent and sound, totally different to other venerable sampling concepts, with which of course it is possible to produce a whole great track or a live performance.)
The Octatrack has a deep learning curve, and no normal brain can uncover all its potential at once, certainly not mine, but the Octatrack rewards patience and resilience, and when you learn to speak its language, sonic pleasure awaits. Creativity out of exploration, just learn it, there is a great community of kind people that share their process in Elektron forums and some blogs. You are also into a read with the manual, it is a must. Feed the Octatrack with good sounds, however you might want to achieve that and the possibilities are just as immense as with Ableton live, a decent computer and a decent audio interface. Ableton in a box some called it, may sound weird, but it has a point.
Pair the Octatrack with the synth flavor your prefer, a good mixer and a few external dyamic effects (or just a pair of decent headphones) and it will be time for some powerful sound, if it is what you have inside, the Octatrack is a beautiful capable sampling instrument.
This machine its the center piece in my studio, i use everyday it to record other Elektrons, to sequence my DSI PRO 2, Blofeld and other synths... Its also very suitable for live performances..
Built quality its also top notch.
Recommended for sure.
I looked over this beast of a machine for maybe a month before purchase, always hesitating due to its price. I have to say that the machine is wonderful, its tricky to learn as it is esoteric but it is worth every penny as it releases you from having to drag around multiple synths. Ive sample sounds from my other gear so this little black box can now not only use those samples in its sequencing abilities but it can also control other gear too. Its biggest asset is releasing me from my PC. All my synths and a DAW in a box.
