The EBS ValveDrive DI is a tube-driven overdrive/DI pedal designed for use with electric bass guitar. It can be used as a preamp to give any dry solid-state amplifier a warm, full-bodied tube sound. The pedal can be used as an overdrive/distortion pedal by increasing the gain control. This can create either a subtle tube overdrive or a growling distortion and everywhere in between. The tube sound generated by this pedal is genuine thanks to the ECC83/12AX7 tube that is installed. The pedal takes the 9V DC input and converts this to a higher voltage required for giving the tube the push it needs to deliver true tube distortion. The ‘Vintage’ footswitch changes the character of the tone from Normal to Vintage. The controls on the pedal adjust Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble and Master Volume. The back panel features a balanced XLR DI output with a ground/lift switch. This feature allows you to use this pedal as a preamp when recording and for sending a signal to FOH. The pedal has a true bypass switch for engaging and disengaging the unit.
I was looking for a good tube bass preamp pedal for quite a long time and it turned out to be the right choice (in fact there's almost nothing to choose from). Not sure if I know what to compare this pedal with (probably those compact Ampeg tube heads would be the closest comparison).
It has two types of distorted/overdriven sounds and clean one. It is not 'true bypass' though, it effects your sound but not distorting it which is a good thing for me. I like this tube feel that it gives to your clean sound and slight compression too.) On the other hand the modern/classic modes is somehing else. You don't need any other distortion type of pedal if you have this. It serverves all your needs. I can't think about playing without this pedal anymore:) Worth every penny.
The only one small complaint. It came with UK-type power supply so I needed to get the adaptor to the regular Eurpean type.
