The Erebus Reissue by Dreadbox is an analogue desktop synthesizer with a focus on rich lead sounds, basslines and harmonic sounds. In Greek mythology Erebus is the god and personification of darkness, in the case of this synthesizer you enter the plane of darkness at the latest with the use of the charismatic LoFi Echo and active use of the patch jacks. The reissue presents itself in a new case, which gives the user the choice between desktop operation or as a Eurorack module (42 TE). Power is now supplied via USB (power supply not included). The connections for MIDI and audio inputs and outputs are located on the front panel of the reissue.

An Eldorado for sound screwdrivers

The Erebus' design consists of two oscillators that differ in octave spacing and waveform selection. Glide can be controlled separately for each oscillator, and hardsync can also be switched from VCO 1 to 2. The filter is a resonant 12dB Lowpass filter that tends to colour the signal strength at higher resonance; it packs a punch and sounds nice and round, especially in the lower frequency range. The transistor-based VCA scores with a low-noise control behaviour. The signal path is completed by the LoFi Echo; it does indeed sound rather gloomy and tends to sometimes drastic transformations at higher Feedback frequencies.

Things get really wild with the patch panel

The modulation section consists of an A/R envelope for the VCA, a slightly percussive ADSR envelope for the filter and a free LFO with triangle and square waveforms. If you include the control voltage inputs and outputs, you get new sounds that would not be possible without the patch jacks. Classic oscillator sync solos, Keytracking for the filter, PWM in the modulation wheel, modulating the LFO frequency via envelope or animating the Delay-Zeit with the LFO cover only a fraction of the possibilities.
