The Audeze LCD-X Creator Package headphones deliver an extremely honest, crystal clear and direct sound with fast impulse response thanks to magnetostatic drivers. Although initially intended for use at the mixing console when mixing or mastering, they are also suitable for the discerning music listener and, due to their low impedance, also deliver a decent level on conventional end devices such as laptop, cell phone or stereo system.
Like all products from Audeze, the LCD-X are also nobly finished: The headband has been newly developed for this model to ensure even better wearing comfort and the ear pads are covered with soft leather. The cables of the LCD-X headphones are of course interchangeable and can be replaced with a premium variant or even balanced cables.
These headphones really live up to their reputation. I was on & off about buying these for years because of the high price tag, but I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair a couple weeks ago.
The build quality is immaculate, and the sound is something else. Coming from the Sennheiser HD600's, the transient response on the LCD-X is a huge step up, and makes tasks like compression a whole lot easier, with much less guesswork. Busy mixes don't have to sound as smothered and messy now, and mixed drums will still smack through - I noticed this especially when listening to metal. The price is also a big step up from my previous pair of headphones, but, you get what you pay for, and I use my headphones for about 8 hours a day, and work on music full-time.
The weight is a little bit troublesome - coming in at about 600 grams, and it's taken a bit of getting used to. I can't use these headphones for more than an hour without feeling the weight getting to me, particularly around the top of my head, but honestly, taking short breaks every hour is something you/I should be doing anyway.
The frequency response was a little bit wonky to me, so I've dialed in a couple notches on the top end, and a shelf to add a bit more brightness. You can EQ these headphones a ridiculous amount with minimal distortion, so it doesn't hurt to shape the response to your tastes if you need, and every batch of Audeze headphones are a little bit different due to the time and care that the manufacturers put into refining them.
Overall, they're worth it, and I love my pair.
