The AMS NEVE 33609JD Limiter Compressor. Comprehensive limiting and compression facilities for music recording, post production and broadcast applications.
The AMS NEVE 33609JD is based on a circuit design first used in the classic 2254 limiter/compressordesigned by Neve in 1969. Its combination of transformers and gain reduction element produces a sound quality which is unique amongst compressor limiters. Coupled with the unit’s unparalleled ease of use, this sound quality has made the AMS Neve 33609/JD a studio standard. Multiple units may be linked for multi-channel operation. The limiter/compressor is a 2U rack-mounting unit with a clear, uncluttered panel layout. There are independent side chains for the compressor and limiter sections with independent threshold, recovery and attack controls. The compressor features a selection of ratios from 1.5:1 to 6:1 and a gain make-up control that comes before the limiter. Overall gain reduction is indicated on a moving coil meter. The AMS Neve 33609/JD offers the legendary Neve sound but with enhanced internal and external I/O switching compared to the originals. The AMS Neve 33609/JD incorporates a 340 discreet output stage as used in the original 33609 design.
The main features of the AMS NEVE 33609JD include:
I ordered an AMS Neve 33609JD but was sent a 33609N model. I was about to send it back but fell in love with the fast/slow attack option of the compressor. I used to have a vintage pair of Neve 2245 compressors in my studio that I really loved, so I was expecting a bit of the same kind of action (as the 33609N has somehow similar circuitry). But the 33609N sounds completely different. It's more delicate, softer and cleaner. I really like it as a stereo bus compressor. It's a kind of a "tuxedo" compressor among my other comps. :)
