Features:
Let me start by saying that this amp is pretty much all I need in an amp. I play alternative rock and a bit of punkrock maybe. I use a bunch of Boss pedals to add some flavour to my sound.
This amp is your basic Tube or Valve amp, 2 channels with their own Master (volume) Bass, Mid, Treble and Gain controls. Mine is the newer version the the bigger Volume and Gain knobs on it. I think its a basic amp because theres no reverb or whatever effect onboard and no effects loop. This is all fine by me because I plug my pedals straight into the amp. This amp isnt for folks who dont want to stand out, it Orange for christsake and I have to mention that this amp is LOUD for its 30watts..... They do make them in black and in white if the bright orange isn what youre about.
Sound Quality:
I was looking for an amp that could the classic (Brittish) type overdrive and have a nice warm clean-ish AC30 sound. Say somewhere between AC/DC and Foo Fighters for overdrive and U2 and Feeder for the cleaner sounds.
Ive read some reviews online saying this amp is a bit of a modern take on the AC30 but I think this is what an AC30 sounds like after a bottle of JD and 2 packs of Lucky Strikes. It has a bit of vintage flavour to it.
Channel 1 is the cleaner more warm sounding channel on this amp, nice low end without sounding muddy or something. I guess you could set this amp up with a dirty rythm sound and a nice lead sound on the second channel. I use the first channel for my clean sound and the second for the dirt.
Channel 2 is more tight and bright sounding and allows you to dail in more gain, Or thats what it seems like to me. Sure it doesnt do the modern metal type of sounds but with a bit of messing around with the knobs you should be able to make it through 15 minutes of Metallica covers during your live-sets.
I guess its a decent allrounder for a rock band but Im not looking for an amp that will do the Fender cleans and the (enter flavour of the month heavy metal amp name here) heavy sounds.
It has a decent clean sound and a dirty sounds that cuts through the band mix, all with a bit of vintage flavour but I guess everything goes these days when it comes to sound.
It does handle effects and works with both humbuckers and singlecoils. I personally favour my Tele but I need the beef of humbuckers for the band... I might cheat and hot rod the Tele just like I did with my Jazzmaster
Reliability/Durability:
I bought this amp about a year ago and its been through a few gigs and our weekly rehearsels ever since. It hasnt let me down yet but I had some footswitch difficulties at one gig, this was to do with a faulty lead I was using at the time. I use another lead nowadays and it works fine. I dont think Ive used this amp enough to really give some points in this department. We dont gig weekly so it doesnt get banged around during transport but we do have 4 to 5 hour rehearsels every week.
Ease of Use:
Im not sure if I should rate this aswell. Its a basic tube amp, so no fancy bells and whistles.
I didnt need the manual yet, the crew form the shop where I got it gave me some basic tips on how to handle it.
Customer Support:
There has been no need for customer support yet but I think Ill just head to the shop if something does happen. Im barely know how to play guitar so I dont wanna harm my gear even more by trying to fix things.
Overall Rating:
For me this more amp then Ill ever need, its loud but it does sound allright at neighbour friendly volumes unlike other tube amps that need to be cranked up to sound right. Sure theres plenty of other fish in the sea, Ive tried Hiwatts, Marshalls, a Fender combo and even an AC30 before I settled with the orange beast. I bought a nice Orange 2X12 cabinet aswell wich work great for smaller and bigger gigs. The AC30 is still something I would love to get next to this because theres just something special about them.
I will get another AD30 if mine gets stolen or breaks down beyond repair. The o
